Test-drive a child today!

2 11 2006

Not much time to blog right now, but I just wanted to post the Vomit-Inducing Quote of the Day from Madonna:

Madonna has said she may adopt another child from abroad following her proposed adoption of a one-year-old baby boy, David Banda, from Malawi.

“I wouldn’t rule it out … but I would like to experience David for a while and see how it works out,” she told the BBC’s Newsnight programme.

Is she adopting a child, or test-driving him? If it doesn’t work out after a while, will she return him? Order him in a different color? Trade him in for a newer model? Hand him off to Angelina?

I saw that quote too and almost lost my lunch. I had the same thought. “See how it works out” makes it sound like she’s waiting for some sign of success or sign of failure.

It’s kind of a good match to what Angelina said about deciding which race/nationality to pick for her next kid, like which one is the best fit with her rainbow family.

It’s so not okay to select kids by color and then use them as arguments that you’re not racist.

See, now that’s commitment for you. So much for permanency as an argument for adoption. She sounds as if she is talking about a temporary arrangment.

I’m really sick of hearing all the shallow defences of Madonna’s actions out there in the media and general public. As if she is selfless and noble for ‘rescuing’ this child. People always have to go back to the ‘dirty orphanages’ bit. They can’t look beyond and see that there are complex issues at play in Malawi and in all international adoptions, not just the singular issue of the ‘dirty orphanage.’ I also think it’s hilarius that she is blaming her critics for being ‘racist.’ That’s so warped, the way she sees herself as merciful and colour-blind.

Oh barf! That’s just horrendous.

I assume she means by “experiencing him” that her nannies will let her know how he is doing–or maybe she is waiting until he has the fine motor skills to potentially set the mansion on fire?

Oh my… “Hand him off to Angelina” – painful, but funny. Those are some bad choices for words – doesn’t she have a publicist who tells her what to say? “experience David for a while” as in, there’s a return policy that comes with him? And see how IT works out?? Wow. Those are some truly revealing words…

I don’t even know where to start with Madonna’s wrongness. As a trying not to be clueless WAP, it revolts me.

A child is not something you try on and return when you get bored with it.

Whoever did her “homestudy” should be shot.

Try before you buy? You know as well as I do that it’s nothing new. In the hidden corners of adoptionland, it happens more often than people might think.

“Madonna funds six orphanages through her Raising Malawi charity and is setting up an orphanage for 4,000 children in a village outside the capital, Lilongwe.”

Don’t you love how that was tacked on at the end? Black humor setting in…can you guess what I’m thinking?

You should really have a warning before the post. I just spewed my breakfast.
